Printful review & guide to building a branded print-on-demand business on Shopify
Printful makes and ships products carrying your designs and your brand after each customer order — so you don't buy stock upfront. This guide focuses on what sets it apart: how its production network works, which branding options you really get, how samples and payments work, and what it all costs.
How we wrote this: an independently researched editorial guide based on Printful's official website and help center, checked 12 October 2026. It is not a hands-on review — we haven't run a Printful store, ordered samples or inspected products. Prices and policies change, so confirm details on the linked sources.

What is Printful?
Print on demand means an item is produced only after someone buys it. With Printful, you add a design to a catalog product, publish it to your store, and when a customer orders, the order is sent to Printful, which bills you for production and shipping and ships the item to your customer.[source]
Because nothing is made until it's ordered, you don't buy and hold ordinary inventory. Your upfront spending goes on things like samples, designs, your store and marketing instead.
Printful's role vs Shopify's role
Shopify is your shop: product pages, checkout, customer payments, policies and payouts. Printful is the production and fulfillment partner behind it, working under your brand — your customers buy from you and never pay Printful.[source]
Not everything is made in-house
Printful operates seven in-house fulfillment centers across Europe and North America, works with partner facilities in Brazil, Japan and Australia, and uses vetted partner companies for some outsourced products.[source][source] That matters for delivery, consistency and — especially — branding, as explained below.
Who might benefit
- Creators, designers and communities selling merchandise
- New brands that want white-label packaging from day one
- Existing Shopify stores adding a custom product line
- Sellers willing to invest in samples and branding to build a consistent experience

Starting a Printful business from zero

Product types and customization methods
Printful's help center refers to product groups including T-shirts and hoodies, embroidered items, all-over-print products, bags, textile and home products, mugs, water bottles, wall art (posters, framed posters and canvas), stationery and stickers.[source][source] We didn't audit the full catalog — confirm specific items, such as hats, in Printful's live catalog.
Methods mentioned in the documentation
- DTG (direct-to-garment) — printing onto apparel; PNG with transparency is usually best.[source]
- DTFlex — another apparel print technique offered by Printful.[source]
- Embroidery — stitched designs; digitization may cost extra.[source]
- All-over print — full-coverage designs; large JPEGs are often suitable.[source]
Not every method is available for every product. The product you choose drives:
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Design requirements | Each product and print area has its own dimensions and DPI rules[source] |
| Production price | Technique, placements and product model all change your base cost |
| Shipping | Rates differ by product category and destination[source] |
| Branding eligibility | Inside labels need tear-away labels; pack-ins exclude mugs, wall art, water bottles, stickers and outsourced products[source][source] |
| Quality control | Embroidery, prints and fabrics each need checking on a physical sample |
| Customer expectations | A premium hoodie and a poster set very different expectations on feel, fit and packaging |
Printful's production and fulfillment model
This is where Printful differs most from marketplace-style services. Instead of you choosing a print shop, Printful's system routes each order.
| Region | Facility | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Europe | Riga, Latvia | Apparel fulfillment; pickup point |
| Europe | Barcelona, Spain | Mainly Western Europe |
| Europe | Birmingham area, UK | UK delivery addresses only |
| North America | Charlotte, NC, US | Core US center |
| North America | Dallas area, TX, US | Primary US center |
| North America | Tijuana, Mexico | Serves the US; parcels cross the border and ship domestically |
| North America | Toronto area, Canada | Canadian market |

How routing works
Printful's algorithm considers your customer's address, where the product is in stock, where the customization technique is available, and facility capacity. Most orders go to the nearest center, but not always — if a product isn't available there, or demand surges, it may go elsewhere. You can't choose the center manually. You can opt out of backup facilities in your store's order settings.[source]
Partner and outsourced products
Partner facilities in Brazil, Japan and Australia handle local fulfillment for selected products, and outsourced products are made by partner companies.[source][source] Partner-fulfilled orders don't support custom packing slips or custom mailers, and branding items can't be added to orders containing outsourced products.[source][source]
A centrally managed model can make branding and consistency easier to plan, but it doesn't automatically guarantee better quality — verify with samples. Delivery times and costs still vary by product, destination and the facility used.
Printful branding: from custom products to a recognisable brand
Putting a design on a T-shirt makes a custom product. A brand is the whole experience — the label inside, the packing slip, the mailer, the note in the box — staying consistent order after order. Printful offers several layers, with restrictions.
White-label fulfillment
Printful says shipments include no Printful branding on or inside the package, so customers only see your brand.[source] This is the default — no extra setup.
Branded packing slips
Upload your logo in the Dashboard's store Branding settings to show it on the shipping label and packing slip, and add a custom message and support contact details.[source] Not available on orders fulfilled by partner facilities.
Custom inside labels
- Printed inside the garment, usually below the collar; maximum print area 3″ × 3″.[source]
- Only on garments with a tear-away label; available across DTG, DTFlex, embroidery and AOP products. Use the catalog's Branding options → Inside label filter.[source]
- Country of origin, size, material and care details are added automatically — you only design the logo area.[source]
- Files: transparent PNG, RGB, actual size, at least 150 DPI; text outlined, 10 pt minimum; English recommended; avoid white on white.[source]
- Cut & sew items use sewn-in labels handled differently.[source]
Custom packaging
Order branded mailers in bulk from a packaging supplier, submit them for approval in the Warehouse section of the Dashboard, then ship them to a Printful facility, which stores them and uses them for your orders.[source] Custom packaging storage is listed at Charlotte, Dallas, Toronto, Riga and Tijuana — not Barcelona; Birmingham only supports domestic shipping of branded items.[source] You pay for the packaging itself and for getting it to the facility.
Branded pack-ins
- Cards, stickers, hang tags or small extras — designs must be approved before you ship them in.[source]
- Only added to orders fulfilled at the same location where they're stored; Printful suggests stocking about a month's worth.[source]
- Maximum 6″ × 8″ × 1″ (15.5 × 20 × 2.5 cm) and 2 oz (55 g).[source]
- Supported on apparel, bags, many textile and home products and some accessories — not stationery, stickers, wall art, water bottles, mugs or outsourced products.[source]
Warehousing change (March 2026)
As of 1 March 2026, Printful no longer stores products at any location. It continues to store branding materials — pack-ins and custom packaging — for print-on-demand orders.[source]
Branding costs and a sensible sequence
White-label packaging is part of standard fulfillment. Optional branding — such as printed inside labels or your own mailers and inserts — adds cost; Growth lists 9% off product branding.[source] A practical sequence for beginners:
- Launch with white-label fulfillment and a logo on packing slips.
- Add inside labels to best-sellers once they're proven.
- Introduce pack-ins or custom mailers only when order volume and margins justify the extra cost and stock.
Printful pricing: Free vs Growth
Plans checked 12 October 2026. Prices in USD.[source]

- You must subscribe to Growth manually; it can't be prepaid yearly, and cancelling mid-cycle gives no refund (perks last until the period ends).[source]
- Free Growth for a year applies once yearly sales reach USD 12,000 — and only if you're already on paid or free Growth. Yearly sales exclude discounts, shipping, taxes and extra fees.[source]
- If you registered via Shopify, Growth is billed through Shopify.[source]

How Printful payments work
There are two separate money flows:
1. Customer → you
Your customer pays your Shopify store. When you receive the money depends on your Shopify payments setup.[source]
2. You → Printful
Printful charges your billing method for production and shipping. You keep the difference.[source]
- Billing methods: credit/debit cards or PayPal; set a primary method or assign one per store.[source]
- Printful Wallet: all charges and refunds run through it; top up manually or set auto-recharge from your primary method. You can only withdraw the full balance.[source]
- Store orders: if the product is synced and automatic order confirmation is on, the order is sent to Printful and billed automatically.[source]
- Manual orders: you pay at checkout and production starts right away.[source]
- Currency: you're billed in your store's currency, wherever the order is fulfilled.[source]
- Failed payments: the order gets "Failed" status and isn't fulfilled until you fix the cause and resubmit it manually.[source]
Quick Stores is a different model
Printful's Quick Stores is an alternative storefront: Printful collects customer payments via Stripe and pays out your profit monthly once it's over USD 25.[source] It's not required to use Printful with Shopify, and eligibility restrictions may apply. This guide focuses on the Shopify route.
Shipping, fulfillment and customer expectations
- Delivery time = production time + shipping time. Neither is fixed, and Printful can't guarantee every order ships from the nearest facility.
- Shipping prices depend on product and destination. Printful pushes flat rates to Shopify through shipping profiles that apply only to Printful products.[source]
- Undercharging risk: Shopify can't add extra per-item shipping within one profile, so a customer buying two items from the same profile may be charged shipping for one.[source]
- Fixes Printful suggests: live rates, free shipping built into prices, custom profiles, or shipping-rule apps.[source]
- Live rates aren't available on Shopify Basic; Grow needs carrier-calculated shipping enabled by Shopify support (extra USD 20/month); Advanced and Plus include it.[source]
- Mixed carts: Shopify adds Printful's rate to your other products' shipping.[source]
- Multi-item orders may be routed or shipped separately; tell customers parcels can arrive at different times.
- International customers may face customs duties and taxes — say so in your shipping policy.
Product quality and sample orders
A mockup isn't a product. Before spending on ads, order samples to check what customers will actually receive.
- Sample orders are discounted, not free, and "may not be available to all accounts at this time".[source]
- You need a connected store; samples become available starting the month after you connect.[source]
- Samples aren't for resale, and sample discounts don't stack: Printful says they can't be combined with Growth plan discounts, coupons or gift cards.[source] The plans page lists 20% off samples on Free and 25% on Growth.[source] We read Growth's 25% as replacing the standard 20%, not adding to it — but Printful doesn't state this explicitly, so check Billing → Discounts in your own Dashboard.
- Every sample must carry a printed design; Printful can't sell blanks. Up to 3 shipping addresses for all sample orders.[source]
- Wall art samples are limited (framed posters 8″ × 10″, canvas 12″ × 12″).[source]
| Last month's sales | Sample orders next month | Items per order |
|---|---|---|
| USD 0 | 1 | Up to 3 |
| USD 100+ | 2 | Up to 3 |
| USD 300+ | 3 | Up to 5 |
| USD 500+ | 4 | Up to 5 |
| USD 1,500+ | 5 (max) | Up to 5 |
Allowances reset on the 1st of each month (UTC) and don't carry over.[source]
Quality-control checklist for samples
- Fabric and material feel and weight
- Print sharpness and resolution
- Colour against your screen design
- Placement and alignment
- Sizing against the size chart
- Embroidery density and stitching
- Packaging, slip and any branding
- Condition on arrival
Preparing print files
Use PNG for transparent designs and most DTG; JPEG for full-coverage artwork. Avoid "Save for Web" (it can drop files to 72 DPI), aim for at least 300 DPI where the guidelines require, work in sRGB IEC61966-2.1, and check each product's File guidelines for print-area sizes. Bright neons and very saturated colours may print less vividly than on screen.[source]
Returns, refunds and customer service
| Situation | Printful's policy |
|---|---|
| Damaged or defective | Free reshipment or refund; send a clear photo, no need to return the item[source] |
| Misprinted (wrong placement, colour or item) | Free reshipment or refund[source] |
| Package lost in transit | Covered if reported within 30 days of the estimated delivery date[source] |
| Customer chose wrong size or colour | Not covered[source] |
| Customer changed their mind | Not covered (Brazil's 7-day "right to regret" is an exception)[source] |
| Customer entered wrong address | Reshipment possible, but you pay reshipping costs[source] |
| Returned to facility (e.g. invalid address) | You're emailed and can reship; unclaimed returns are donated after 30 days[source] |
Quality issues must be reported within 30 days of delivery. Approved refunds go to your Printful Wallet by default.[source] If you dislike how your own design printed, that's not a fulfillment error.[source]
Intellectual property and design rights
You need commercial rights to everything you print. Using Printful's Design Maker doesn't give you rights to images you upload yourself.
- Copyrighted characters, film or game artwork: don't use without a licence.
- Brand logos and trademarked slogans: avoid — trademark rules can apply even to short phrases.
- Fan art: usually still needs the rights holder's permission.
- Licensed artwork: check the licence explicitly allows merchandise/commercial use.
- AI-generated designs: can still resemble protected work; review outputs carefully.
- Fonts and graphic assets: confirm commercial-use licences.
- Original artwork: safest, and best for building a distinctive brand.
Assets supplied inside a design tool may come with their own terms — read them rather than assuming they cover everything you upload.

Two ways to add products
- Create in Printful, publish to Shopify — recommended for new products; mockups, descriptions and prices arrive configured.[source]
- Create in Shopify, then sync — enable importing existing products, refresh data, then assign category, model, colour, size and print file to each variant.[source]
Printful vs Printify
Printful and Printify announced a merger in November 2024 and said both would continue to operate as separate brands.[source] They're related companies, but the services work differently. See our Printify review for the other side.

Which should you consider?
- Consistent branded packaging and inside labels are central to your plan → look closely at Printful's eligibility rules.
- You want to compare and choose individual print shops on price and location → explore Printify.
- Unsure → order samples of the same product from both and compare total cost, quality and delivery to your market.
Neither universally wins on quality, price or speed.

Frequently asked questions
What is Printful?
Printful is a print-on-demand and fulfillment service. You add your designs to products from its catalog, connect a store such as Shopify, and Printful produces and ships each item after a customer orders. It runs seven in-house fulfillment centers in Europe and North America and also uses partner facilities and outsourced partner products, so not every order is made in-house.
Is Printful free?
Printful's Free plan has no subscription fee and includes products, integrations and automatic fulfillment. You still pay Printful for production and shipping on every order, plus samples, any branding, your Shopify plan, payment fees and marketing.
How much is Printful Growth?
When checked on 12 October 2026, Printful Growth cost USD 24.99 per month (taxes included), billed in 30-day cycles, with a 14-day free trial advertised on the plans page. Perks listed include up to 33% off custom products and 9% off product branding. Discounts vary by product. Once your yearly sales reach USD 12,000 while subscribed, Printful gives you Growth free for a year.
Does Printful put its own branding on packages?
No. Printful says it operates as a white-label service with no Printful branding on or inside the package. You can add your logo to packing slips and shipping labels. Orders fulfilled by Printful's partner facilities don't support custom packing slips or custom mailers.
Can I add custom inside labels with Printful?
On eligible garments, yes. Inside labels work only on garments with a tear-away label, across techniques including DTG, DTFlex, embroidery and all-over print. The print area is up to 3″ × 3″, and garment specs such as size, material and care are added automatically.
Does Printful offer free samples?
No. Eligible accounts with a connected store get discounted sample orders — the plans page lists 20% off on Free and 25% off on Growth — an alternative rate, not stacked, since sample discounts can’t be combined with other discounts. Sample orders may not be available to all accounts, start the month after you connect a store, are limited per month, and aren't for resale.
Does Printful still offer product warehousing?
No. As of 1 March 2026, Printful no longer stores products. It still stores branding materials — pack-ins and custom packaging — at selected fulfillment centers for print-on-demand orders.
What does Printful refund?
Damaged, defective or misprinted items and packages lost in transit, if reported within 30 days of the delivery date (or estimated delivery date for lost packages). It doesn't cover wrong size or colour choices, change of mind, or a wrong address entered by the customer (reshipping costs apply).
Printful or Printify — which should I choose?
Neither is best for everyone. Printful runs its own production centers plus partners and routes orders automatically; Printify lets you choose between independent Print Providers. The two companies announced a merger in November 2024 but continue as separate brands. Compare samples, costs and branding needs for your products.
